Electric Umbrella, Hamburg, realised with the Software SOFTIMAGE|XSI press photos of the new Bugatti Veyron 16.4 for Volkswagen
The test of the available prototypes and the few demonstration cars meant that, at the beginning of 2003, the generation of the neccesary press photos of Bugatti Veyron took place not in the studio, but entirely by computer, from the construction data of Volkswagen. The most difficult challenge was to create a realistic view as possible of the car. In addition we had to maintain flexibility for any structural changes made to the vehicle during the production process.

A `super sports car` is going to be built After we got the CAD – data of the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 from our customer, we began to process the single components into the main component groups of the car. We then divided the single prefabricated parts of these respective groups in single scenes, so that we could get a better overview of the approximately 4500 single pieces of the car. We had to confront the fact that it is quite difficult to built a car from all its single components without any construction plans. We wouldnt´ have been succesful in completing this project without the constant help of the engineers at Volkswagen AG.

After we had examined the components and sorted them into groups, we removed the unnecessary parts, and then formed groups from the component of similar material. Next to that we modelled missing prefabricated parts after the design sketch. In the last phase of the built we exported the respective component groups as a model, so that we we could use them for reference later. The high flexibility and the intuitive interface of SOFTIMAGE/XSI modelled the data and administered the polymeshes extremely well! The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 in space

Following the construction of the vehicle we had to create the background against which the Veyron should be placed. For this, we favoured a simple design which would give the car enough free space and wouldn´t interfere with the colours and forms of the bodywork. We achieved this aim firstly by using neutral colours, few details, and a clear, linear surface. Afterwards,we imported pieces of the bodywork, to test the illumination of the vehicle and the metalshader. First attempts with final gathering produced very realisitc pictures, but as things developed it turned out that the final product wasn´t appropriate for our customer´s idea of the backdrop. After we modeled the background and fixed the surface characteristics, we created a scene for the layouts. For doing the first layout – step as efficiently as possible we first of all produced the generally lightset.

Afterwards, we defined the different views towards the vehicle. Accordingly to complete the picture´s composition we moved the space in relation to the vehicle and camera. After we selected the most comprehensive images, we had to work out the the single pictures. We split up the layout – scene into many scenes, one for each subject. By means of different lights, consisting of points- and spotlights, we were able to illuminate the distinguishing marks of the bodywork. In addition, we placed around the car white constant grids , as the room by itself didn´t contain enough reflective objects. These brightened up and accentuated the compact car´s appearance and gave the paint the „last kick“.
The final picture In the last phase of this project we imported the single passes in Photoshop. Here also SOFTIMAGE /XSI demonstrated its quality: All the colour and Level adjustments had been simple in SOFTIMAGE /XSI including the passes. Electric Umbrella realised in total about nine subjects, including two later photos of the moving vehicle and a detailed photo of the spoiler of the `super sports car`. One of these pictures has been distinguished with the second place at Animago Award 2004.
